Diva lamps/Rangoli patterns

We have been learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali. Hindus celebrate Diwali as a time of new beginnings. In the Diwali story, lights were used to guide Rama and Sita home again and Rangoli patterns placed at the entrance to homes to bring good fortune. Try making either a diva lamp or a rangoli pattern.

Diva lamp - use clay, play dough or salt dough and mould your lamp like the one below. You can put a tealight in it to finish it off.

Rangoli pattern

You can draw these using pencil crayons, chalk, felt tips or make them using coloured rice. If you want to have a go with coloured rice then you need to dye the rice by mixing uncooked rice with food colouring and a tablespoon of vinegar. Put it all in a bag and give it a good shake until the rice has changed colour. Then try drawing your own rangoli pattern like the ones below or you can print off one to colour by clicking the link.
